Lead bismuth target for Accelerator-driven Transmutation System (ADS)

Lead bismuth eutectic alloy (LBE) is a promising option as a spallation target for accelerator-driven transmutation systems (ADS) to reduce the radiological toxicity from long-lived radioactive waste. LBE is a heavy metal and has suitable characteristics both as a spallation target and as a coolant for transmutation systems. However, LBE is also known as a highly corrosive with structural materials. In this paper, technological developments to overcome the issue, the latest research activities such as hightemperature operation and oxygen concentration control to ensure corrosion resistance, are introduced together with the outline of the target for ADS.

Spallation neutron source target at J-PARC

The pulsed spallation neutron source driven by a high-power accelerator is one of the most powerful apparatus to provide high intensity and high quality neutrons with narrow pulse width for conducting cutting-edge researches in several domains of materials and life science. In this system, proton beams of several kW to MW order extracted from the high power accelerator is injected into a target, which is heavy metal, to generate vast amount of neutrons via the spallation reactions with the target nuclei, and slows down these neutrons to thermal to cold neutrons with a moderator and a reflector. Resultant neutron beams are then supplied to a suit of the state-of-the-art experimental devices. In this paper, mechanism to produce neutron beams and outline of the spallation neutron source, engineering design of a target system such as a mercury target, and technical topics to solve the pitting damage problem of the target vessel which is caused by the pressure wave of up to 40MPa at maximum generated in the mercury by the pulsed proton beam injection are reviewed by referring mainly to the mercury target system of the pulsed spallation neutron source at J-PARC.

Deployment of the next-generation LLRF control system for the J-PARC RCS

The LLRF control system for the J-PARC RCS plays an important role in acceleration of high intensity beams. The original system had been working well without significant problems for more than a decade, however, the long term maintenance became difficult due to the obsolesce of the old FPGAs in the system. Therefore we developed and deployed the next-generation LLRF control system. The next-generation system is based on the modern platform, MTCA.4. The most important new function of the system is the multiharmonic vector rf voltage control feedback, which compensate the heavy beam loading in the wideband cavity better than the feedforward at the beam intensity of the design beam power, 1MW. The commissioning results are reported. The next-generation system has been successfully deployed.

Our club was newly established the workshop against proposal and the 1st workshop of "Discussing and Brainstorming for the World of Beam Physics in the thirty years ahead" was holed at Kyoto on July 30th 2019. This paper will report the 1st workshop.

Young Researchers Association of the Japan Beam Physics Club

Recently, many scientific communities and associations in Japan establish young division for young scientists and students. Young Researchers Association of the Japan Beam Physics Club was established in March 2018 by young scientists who research the beam physics as basic research for particle acceleration and laser. We will report a detail history and trigger of the establishment of our association, followed by the explanations of ourselves, which are the structure of our organization, members, activities and purposes. Lastly, we will discuss our future vision of Young Researchers Association of the Japan Beam Physics Club.

Neutron source

Spallation neutron source provides thermal and cold neutrons for materials researches. Those neutrons are obtained by slowing down the neutrons generated in a neutron production target by injecting high energy protons in surrounding reflector and moderators. This article introduces basic characteristics of the neutron production target at first, and then explains the characteristics of moderator, especially the design to generate high intensity and high quality neutron pulses with narrow width in the moderators used in the 1-MW spallation neutron source at J-PARC. Furthermore, the design procedure of the spallation neutron source is described.

Basic and applied life science extended by neutron

Life science is expected to be one of the major subjects of neutron research. The quantum beam properties of neutron, isotope effect and inelastic/quasi-elastic scattering are useful for studying crystal structures, solution structures and dynamic structures of biomolecules. Research on physical properties of biological materials by inelastic scattering is promising as applied research such as food science. The high-intensity pulse neutrons realized by the accelerator not only has developed the life science research so far, but also is opening a gate to the academic field which has never been used before.
